So this week we’ve learned about blog design, layouts, and widgets. Before we move onto our blog content, there is just one thing we’ve got left to do. Yep, you guessed it. Today we’re going to create a blog banner that’s worth waving over our site.
I’m no banner expert. But thanks to the many experts out there, I’ve learned a thing or two about creating a blog banner.
First thing: A blog banner can be created using your own photos.
But before you create your blog banner, there are a few things you should keep in mind.
1. Keep it Simple
2. Keep it Focused
3. Keep it Light Weight
4. Raise it High
When your creating a blog banner you want to keep it simple. It’s more than a headline in a newspaper, and more like the front cover of a book. You want your readers to be able to read your blog’s title clearly, but for your background not to create a distraction from your words. Make it simple to read.
Your blog banner should focus on your blog’s theme. If your blog is about saving wild horses in Utah, then a bunch of dogs playing poker in the background doesn’t make much sense does it? Now if your blog was about the day in the life of a dog catcher it just might appear more suitable.
It is easy to get carried away with fancy fonts and detailed graphics. These things may look really cool, but they add a lot of weight to your banner. And when I say “weight”, I’m talking about your file size. You want to make sure you check both the pixel size requirements and the file size requirements for your blog banner. You’ll find this information by clicking on Theme Options and download banner. I believe in Blogger it is under the layout page and click on edit banner.
There are several different software programs that allow you to create a blog banner. Simply Amazing Designs Studio has a tutorial on how to make a banner for you blog using Gimp. Or you might find you prefer Photoshop. domestically Blissful offers a step by step instructional post on how to make a blog banner for free.
If you’re using Blogger then you might want to learn how to create a custom Blogger header by Blogger Buster.
I, personally, create a lot of my headers using Paint. Yep, good ol paint. You know that free program that comes on almost all computers. While you’re working on your blog banners this weekend, I’ll work on putting together a tutorial for you on creating a blog banner in Paint.
Can’t wait to see all your designs!
